Jennie Anderson Nelson, the Matriarch of the Nelson family, was born Jennie Evelyn Anderson on July 29, 1901 in Manhattan, New York. She was the oldest of three sisters born to Andrew Anderson and Frieda Anderson, immigrants from Malmo and Stockholm, Sweden. The middle sister was Violet Anderson Faust, and the youngest was Helen Anderson Hansen.
Not much is known of the Anderson family before 1920. At some point the family moved from Manhattan to Brooklyn. Andrew worked on the docks of New York City in a capacity that did not require him to "shape-up," so he was able to have steady work.
Violet married Grey Harvey Faust, and they had two boys, Curtis Andrew Faust, born December 4, 1939, and Harvey Faust, born circa 1941. Grey was a machinist at the AMF manufacturing facility at Bush Terminal in Brooklyn.
Helen married Charles Hansen, a first generation American of Norwegian immigrant parents. Helen and Charles never had any children of their own, but Helen enjoyed being with her nephews and nieces. Charles was the manager of a paint store on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, and Helen worked for Rex Chainbelt in Manhattan.
Andrew and Frieda lived with Jennie and her family for a while on Bay 8th Street in Brooklyn in the early thirties. Then for a while they lived near Sunset Park before they moved in with Violet and her family at 343 56th Street, next door to the Nelsons at 347 56th Street, in the late thirties-early forties. When the Nelsons moved up the street to 367, the Andersons and Fausts moved to 52nd Street above 6th Avenue. It was while living there that Frieda and Andrew passed away in the late forties.
