WELCOME INTRODUCTION AND INDEX

Welcome to YOUR Nelson family website. This is a history of the Bernhardt Luvig Nelson and Jennie Anderson Nelson lineage that began with their wedding on April 16, 1921 in Brooklyn, NY. (The photo above was taken at Bernie and Jennie's 50th wedding anniversary). It is also a living journal for those of us who are the beneficiaries of their love, either as direct descendants or through marriage, irrespective of how many generations removed we may be. Though life’s experiences may cause the families to be spread far and wide, it is anticipated that this website can close the gap of time and distance to remind us of our common bond as each of us wends our way back home to our ultimate roots with our Creator.

WE NEED FAMILY INPUT!

The Transportation Industry

Several Nelsons have been involved with the transportation industry in one form or another. Bernie started his career as a chauffeur, became a truck driver for several construction companies in and around New York City, particularly hauling dirt from the tunnels being excavated for the NYC subway system. He also worked as a civilian at the Brooklyn Army Base Transportation Corps during World War II, and retired from Kenway Metals after a twenty-year career of dispatching trucks loaded with various metal shapes to various industries around the NY-NJ metropolitan area.

After serving in Patton’s Third Army in Europe during World War II, Warren’s first job as a civilian was driving a trolley in Brooklyn. When the city converted to buses, Warren became a bus driver. He tells the story of his experience during the blizzard of 1947 when his trolley was stranded. He himself could not get home, but he was close enough to Mrs. Roi's house (his mother-in-law), and he stayed there three days before he could finally get back home. Years later Bobby also drove a NYC bus for most of his career, retiring from the NYC Transit System in the late nineties.

Bobby’s younger brother Tommy was involved in the transportation industry from a different perspective: he sold locomotives for General Electric. His first territory was Africa – the entire continent. He was so effective at what he did that the company didn’t want him to retire, and they enticed him to stay on for a while longer.

Before he joined the Navy in 1946, Allen worked for the Chrysler Corporation in New York City. He was selected to drive one of the vehicles during a ticker tape parade in the city, a victory parade celebrating the end of World War II. Allen drove the car that followed the open limousine carrying Winston Churchill.

Most of Howie’s career involved transportation. For years he delivered newspapers in and around the northern New Jersey area. His day generally started before sunrise, usually around 3:00 or 4:00 AM, in order to get the morning paper to many suburban homes before folks began their workday. At one point the family classified Howie as the world’s oldest paperboy! Later on he drove an airport limousine, but that was short-lived. He also drove a taxi in Lantana Florida for about a year.

The toughest lesson Gene ever had to learn about the transportation industry was that, in spite of his good driving record, he was not cut out to be a truck driver. In the early seventies he and Anne’s brother, Frank, took a Ryder tractor-trailer driving course in Vineland, New Jersey in preparation for a move to North Carolina. Upon graduation Gene had two consecutive Monday jobs driving a straight truck for Rodeway, and that was all he needed to realize he was a fish out of water. From there he went back into architecture, where he belonged. His last career before retiring was as a design engineer with Aluminum Ladder Company in Florence, SC, where he was given the opportunity of custom designing specialized fall protection and safe access equipment, primarily for the transportation industry.
Chris' tour of duty began in 1998 while the Coast Guard was still under the supervision of the US Department of Transportation. It wasn't until after 911 that the Coast Guard came under the jurisdiction of Homeland Security.

The '04 Texas Thanksgiving

After his wife Anne passed away in August ’03, Gene worked another year before retiring on sister Marilyn’s 67th birthday, October 29, 2004. He moved to Venice, Florida the day after retirement, and then on a whim made arrangements a few weeks later to pick up 80-year-old brother Warren at a craft show in Georgia and make the long trek to visit Marilyn and her family in Kingwood, Texas for Thanksgiving.

The journey gave both Warren and Gene the opportunity to spend some quality time together that they hadn’t previously spent in many years. It had also been decades since the three remaining children of Bernie and Jennie had been together for a holiday gathering. Marilyn enhanced the setting by serving a delightful Thanksgiving dinner on dinnerware given to her by Jennie forty years earlier. The dinnerware was the very same that Gene bought for Jennie in Germany while serving in the Army during the late fifties. The trip also gave Warren and Gene the opportunity to see first hand the operation of Including Kids, Jennifer's school for autistic children, a successful program that had grown dramatically since its inception a few years earlier, and is still growing as of this writing.

In spite of a demanding schedule with the school, Jennifer took some time to spend with her uncles. Her husband Stephen’s eight-year-old daughter Sarah from a previous marriage was in town for the holiday. A visit to the NASA Space Center in Houston seemed like a good idea for the gang, so off we went for a grand time. Even five-month-old Eric Anthony seemed poised for the venture. While there we elected to succumb to the touristy practice of letting them take a group photo. In hindsight, it was a wonderful move because the significance of that photo was dramatically increased recently with Warren’s passing on January 25th, 2009. The photo is the last one taken that portrays Jennie and Bernie’s three remaining children together, and it is indeed a gem of a picture. We are pleased to share it with the family here. From left to right are Jennifer, Sarah, Gene (standing) and Warren (sitting holding Eric Anthony), and Marilyn.

Dave Saunders

Dave Saunders was an active member of the youth group and Choristers at South Reformed Church. He was a year ahead of Gene at Brooklyn Tech.
Dave’s love of country and western music was always his first love. Every opportunity he had he was dressed in his country best, including the cowboy boots and hat. Often his guitar was slung over his shoulder as well. Dave took a lot of ribbing from city slickers about his country ways, but he never let it stop him from sharing what came from within his heart, and he always had a good sense of humor about it.

It’s been years since anyone’s been in touch with Dave, and only recently did we run across Dave’s website. It’s heart warming to see how he has remained true to what has always been his passion.

Pastor and Mrs. Williams

Longevity seemed to be the watchword for Pastor Frank Curtis Williams and his wife Gertrude Ryder-Bennett Williams. Pastor Williams was the head pastor of South Reformed Church, located on the corner of Fourth Avenue and 55th Street in Brooklyn, NY, from the mid-forties until the mid-sixties. He performed the wedding ceremonies for most of the Nelson children who married during that time period. Pastor Williams’ favorite Biblical quote was, “All things work together for good.” His reverential presence always exuded a feeling of great comfort and warmth in any setting.

For all of his ecclesiastical accomplishments over the years, however, Pastor Williams became known more as the husband of an accomplished, published poet, Gertrude Ryder-Bennett, born into an established historic family whose Brooklyn roots preceded the American Revolution. Mrs. Williams published her poetry under her maiden name Gertrude Ryder-Bennett, as noted in this New York Times obituary published July 24, 1982. She lived her entire life at the same historic family home, the Wyckoff-Bennett House near Kings Highway in the Gravesend section of Brooklyn. A reprint from Old Dutch Houses of Brooklyn includes an old photograph and much detailed information about the house and its family history.

Mrs. Williams was always a delightful presence. She was tall, thin, and stately, and a smiling conversationalist. In a very endearing way she was lovingly eccentric. Faithful to her husband’s ecumenical duties, Mrs. Williams was always in church every Sunday morning. It was obvious how focused she was on his sermons because she was always absorbed with her eyes closed. She and Pastor Williams invited the youth group to tour their home one day, and I can remember being astonished at discovering it was a mini-farm with lots of trees and a huge fenced lawn smack in the middle of a congested urban setting.

Though we do know that Mrs. Williams passed away July 14, 1982, and that she was survived by Pastor Williams, we have not found out anything further about Pastor Williams beyond that point.
Update. Adina Yonan Van Buren has just recently contributed this gem regarding Pastor Williams:
"When reading about Pastor Williams, I thought that perhaps you would like to know what I discovered during our trip to Brooklyn in l986:
"While in the city, I wanted to go to their home at 1669 E. 22th St. to see if Pastor Williams was still there. No one came to the door, but we saw some neighbors across the street and went over to inquire about the Williams. The neighbors told us that the minister who had lived there had sold the house. I was concerned having recalled that Mrs. Williams had always planned to donate it as a museum to the city. I traced the name of the new owner (Stuart Mont) and wrote him a letter inquiring about the home. I learned that he and his wife had done much to preserve the building as a landmark. A few months after our return home to Illinois from that summer trip, I received a postcard from Pastor Williams. Evidently he had been to visit the Monts who gave him my letter inquiring about him, his wife and the Wyckoff-Bennett Homestead.
"Pastor wrote me that after his wife had died in 1982, he sold the home to the Monts. He also said (in his 1986 note to me) that he had since remarried and that he and his wife were in the process of moving to a retirement home in Connecticut. He mentioned that the Monts were working closely with the Wyckoff Association to preserve the integrity of the home. I was happy to hear from him and to learn that the Homestead was going to withstand the tests of modern times that have eliminated so many old homes in the quest for "progress."
"I have three of the poetry books that Mrs. Williams wrote that include references to the Hessian soldiers staying at their home. Perhaps you recall that each Confirmation Class was invited to their home for a lunch and view of the interior - double Dutch doors and all! Pastor Williams had created a model of the land as it was during the Revolutionary War. Really interesting to imagine what it must have been like. The ancestral portraits adorning the entrance way were museum worthy. I hope all of that is still intact."
Thanks so much, Adina. Indeed, a most valued contribution.

The Brooklyn Trolley

For generations the trolley rivaled the subway as a means of transportation in and around New York City. When Warren Nelson came home from the war in Europe his first job back in the civilian world was as a trolley driver. When the city made the transition to buses, Warren became a city bus driver. Years later Bobby Nelson joined the corps of city bus drivers, a vital part of the city transportation system.

The trolley was such an integral part of city life that the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team was so named to honor the “trolley dodgers,” the civilian population that had to keep a vigil for the many trolleys rolling about the city streets.

This particular video shows footage of Brooklyn trolley runs primarily along Fifth Avenue at Flatbush Avenue, Bergen Street, and Ninth Street. The title notes the time period as circa 1938, however, there are late 1940’s cars in the film. In particular, at 3:20 into the video a 1947 Studebaker is shown coming into view on the right, following the trolley.

On his summer run to work at the Schrafft’s 912 Flatbush Avenue store, Gene Nelson rode the last trolley route in Brooklyn in the summer of 1957.

The Rose Petal Rustler

‘Twas a blustery winter morn at the National Cemetery in Salisbury, North Carolina on January 28th, 2009, what would have been Warren Nelson’s eighty-fifth birthday. As family and friends gathered at the ceremony honoring Warren’s military service, and to mourn his passing three days earlier, Warren’s playful Spirit was determined to make his presence known. Convention would have it the wind caused the rose petals placed on Warren’s remains earlier in the service to rustle and scatter, but the family knew better; Warren’s Spirit was sending everyone a verifiable sign that all was well with him indeed in his new heavenly home. On that day for those few moments we knew the wind was Warren.
